Do you think WordPress is better than Shopify for e-commerce in 2020?

Let's first talk about WordPress-

  1. WordPress is the popular platform to make professional website and using Woo-commerce plugin you can convert website into eCommerce one.
  2. Woo-commerce has to be used with other plugins to make your website look professional eCommerce website.
  3. Need to purchase professional ready made theme.
  4. Will have full control on your website from designing to uploading products data.
  5. You will have to pay web hosting every year
  6. Payment gateway integration and shipping integration you will have to make your own or hire professional.

Now, shopify

  1. There are professional in creating eCommerce website for their clients
  2. There 3 plans for the clients and choose one according to requirements
  3. There is monthly payouts with different features
  4. You will get ready made website with payment integration and other feature required for eCommerce website.
  5. But you won't have full control over it.
  6. You can focus on business instead of designing website.

Now, you can decide what you want for your business. If you can invest and don't want to bother about creating website from scratch go for Shopify or else want to have full control from creation to changes use WordPress.

WordPress can be used for content management or for eCommerce but you would want to consider the type of products and services you are selling, whether you intend to do the development work yourself etc, etc. Shopify is designed for eCommerce so it has built-in features that will, with the right development skills, allow you to get up and running pretty quickly as opposed to building components and using widgets etc. Before you make a decision on what solution you want to use, you should have a comprehensive understanding of your requirements, how many customers you want to serve and how quickly your audience will grow, what type of payment gateway and tax support you need, whether you need live online access to your customers if they have questions, how many variables your products will have (colors, sizes etc) etc. That will help you to review the capabilities of the solution and make a decision. Ideally, if development is not in your core skills tool kit, you would want to engage an expert to help you choose and develop the right solution and then hand it off to you to keep it evergreen with new products, etc

Firstly though, we need to look at the differences between these two platforms. WordPress is an open source solution that you need to host yourself, so it all depends on the web host you choose and how well optimized you site is as to how well it will perform. As it is an open source platform, once you have built the site, it is yours, you can move it from host to host if you want to.

Shopify on the other hand is a fully hosted eCommerce platform and you get web hosting and the eCommerce software all bundled into one monthly price. With Shopify, you don’t have to configure your site for performance, they do that for you but you are tied to the platform, if you aren’t happy with Shopify, then you will need to build a brand new site on another platform.

Secondly, lets look at what they offer in terms of eCommerce. Shopify is built specifically for eCommerce and all of its features are aimed at not only getting people to your site, but also converting them into paying customers.

WordPress on the other hand is a blogging platform and eCommerce functionality is added by installing a plugin such as Woo-commerce or Ecwid. This does give you the flexibility as to how you choose to run your site, you can have it so that the main focus is eCommerce or you can have it as a business site with a store built into it.

But Which One is Better?

Well, that comes down to you and your business. What do you need your site to achieve? Do you want to be in full control of your site but be responsible for everything or pay a monthly fee, relinquish some control but have most of the stuff taken care of for you?

Honestly, there isn’t one eCommerce platform that is better than the others as it depends on which one is going to work best for you!
