Even during a pandemic, how does the dollar dominate other currencies?

Dollar will grow in value specially in stress.
When businesses are doing great in the rest of the world the money follows. When it's gloomy else where the money goes back to USD.
Right now, you don't want to stay invested in equities, do you. Do you find debt safe? No.
Are you happy with keeping your money in banks? I don't think so.
The safest asset class is Government Securities in India. They will give you a return of 6.2%.
But can you really trust the government of India when it has stopped getting Rs 1 lakh crores from GST every month?
There is one supreme asset class and that is US Government Sovereign Bonds. They currently give you a return of 0.64%.
This is why USD is so much in demand.

Any person with extra money in his pocket would like to get it converted into USD.- Sandeepan Bose

Due this pandemic USA curry have some resources which lead their currency on top are as follows-
  • As of 31 March 2020, Fort Knox holds 147.34 million troy ounces (4,583 metric tons) of gold reserves with a market value of US $236.4 billion, representing 56.35% of the gold reserves of the United States. As of 2017, the U.S. gold reserves of 8,133.5 metric tons was nearly as much as the next three countries combined
  • The economy of the United States is highly developed and mixed. It is the world's largest economy by nominal GDP and net wealth and the second-largest by purchasing power parity (PPP).
  • The U.S. is the world's largest importer and the second-largest exporter.
  • The New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq are by far the world's largest stock exchanges by market capitalization and trade volume. Foreign investments made in the U.S. total almost $4.0 trillion, while American investments in foreign countries total over $5.6 trillion.
  • They have 21.1 trillion dollar economy the world biggest economy. - Ankit Ramaiya.
The answer to your question are as below point wise :
  1. USA is the No.1 Economy in the world .Therefore their currency will also dominate quite logically.
  2. USA has very high productivity compared to many other countries and hence Dollar dominates.
  3. The Inflation in USA is very low therefore Dollar also dominate.
  4. Dollar is the main currency in the world Economy so all the other countries would like to keep a good stock of Dollars and therefore demand of Dollar goes up and so its value . - Debasis Dutta,
Because when people / investors sell their investments, they have to change these investments for a currency. Since a lot of investments are denominated in US dollar, that is why there is a demand for dollar. But in the long run, there is no point in holding dollar (history should teach you), because it has lost over 90% of this value.
