Are GMO foods really as bad as they are projected to be? What are the damaging side effects and how do we managed?
This is not based on science - neither GMO plant product should be bad.
What are the GMO plant products which create health problems, and how can we manage this?
- We are not insects - therefore the GMO plants that have been altered to have the gene of the bacillus thuriengensis bacteria should not affect us. We are not butterflies and those plants having this alteration do not need large volumes of the highly toxic insecticides sprayed over them, As those are systemic chemicals they are remaining inside the cell structure of the plants - we therefore eat them and they may alter out own cells. Which is worse? A bacteria that we have evolved alongside for millions of years - or the insecticides?
- The second group of GMO has been made to be able to be unaffected by the common herbicde glyphosate. Now this is where there is a chance for a potential problem ………. but I feel that this is only if the food crop has been sprayed with glyphosate far too heavily that it represents a danger (glyphosate is a phosphoninate a chemical groups that has been connected to endocrine disruption). On the other hand - if the crop has not been so sprayed - the question then is - are you glyphosate? If not - should there be any danger?
For the US the danger may be greater as glyphosate resistant food crops, especially corn, canola and soy beans, are all sprayed with glyphosate. In some years the grain crops (wheat, rye, barley and oats) are also sprayed with glyphosate in order to ripen the grains evenly.
There are no “damaging effects.” Anti-GMO hysteria is exactly like antivax hysteria: pseudoscience believed by gullible people with little background in science.
The thing that’s most amusing about GMOs is the fact that people become frightened of making one precisely known change to one gene, but they’re totally fine with blasting seeds with hard radiation or soaking seeds in DNA-altering chemicals that make hundreds of thousands of genetic changes at random. Food that is genetically modified by radiation mutagenesis or chemical mutagenesis has no oversight, no safety testing, no rules about testing, and can be sold as “certified organic.”
No credible or reputable scientist claims GMOs are bad. The only naysayers are highly paid shills of the multibillion dollar organic food industry.
The benefits are legion, to numerous to list, and the few minor side effects in highly sensitive individuals are far outweighed by the benefits.
Worse actually. Part of the reason why it’s worse is due to the fact they test the results of their GMO products on the public, which so far proves to be quite disturbing. Everything from severe food allergies to chronic illness has been reported all over the world, especially in countries where GMOs are most sold, like here.
